Firmware Problems Concerning Seagate 7200.11 Hard Drives
Seagate have admitted there is a firmware problem in the new 7200.11 series of hard drives and have already issued a firmware fix. The problem stems from a memory bug where the cache size is not reported correctly.
If you are lucky enough to have found this out before your disk drive has failed, then get onto the Seagate website and download firmware update (if it is appropriate), or search for ‘Seagate 7200.11 firmware update’ on Google.
According to the manufacturer, the problem affects the following drives..
500 GB : ST3500320AS
750 GB : ST3750330AS
1000 GB : ST31000340AS
Reports on the Seagate forum show that there may be a similar problem with the 1.5 TB version of the drive.
If your hard disk has failed, then you will need a data recovery company, such as MjM Data Recovery Ltd in the UK who, at the time of writing, are one of only a handful of companies in the world that are able to repair the drives in order to recover the data. A link to MjM is provided above.
Other problems that have been reported with 7200.11 drives are..
1. The drive hangs during start up or;
2. The drive reports as 0 MB.
MjM Data Recovery can also recover data from all other manufacturers of hard disk and other storage equipment and are usually the first company able to recover when new problems arise.
They were also first when there were problems with the translator in Seagate SCSI drives and (according to their website) repair these drives for customers all over the world.

The Custom Laptops Used By Sgi In The Movies
SGI have a long history of involvement with Hollywood. Having pioneered the special effects industry, SGI’s computers have powered the effects for some of the most successful blockbuster movies. Although best recognised for their work in Jurassic Park, SGI have also been said to have created laptop computers for several other movies.
Most famously, SGI laptops featured prominently in the film Twister. These were however models, put together by the effects team Banned From The Ranch. They use SGI Presenter displays - an early LCD monitor - with leads going off screen to Indys, which provided the on-screen displays.
A ruggedised laptop machine also featured in Congo, where Laura Linney’s character deployed one deep in the jungle to communicate via satellite with TraviCom HQ. Again, these were effects team models, and weren’t real computers.
The only full SGI laptop ever made was by a group called CRI, who specialise in designing ruggedised models of laptops for the military. They developed a special Indy laptop called the LinC3D 75-FS. These rugged computers weren’t just deployed on the battlefield - they were also used by the US Navy, and one was [spi]alleged|rumoured[/spin] to have been flown up to the ISS. Although made for the defence industry, maybe one day some of these unique computers will appear on the open market.

Pentium D 950 Buying Guide
Out of production processors can make for inexpensive upgrades. Maybe you are building yourself a new PC. Either way, the Intel Pentium D, which was manufactured by Intel from 2005-2008, offers a variety of cost, performance, and power consumption options.
The Pentium D line production was stopped in 2008, yet you can still aquire new units on many websites.
The Pentium D processors are a line of dual-core 64 bit x86 processors. The line came in a variety of clock speeds ranging from 2.66GHz to 3.73Ghz. One of the most popular versions is the Intel Pentium D 950 model which runs at 3.4 Ghz, has a 4 MB cache (2×2MB), and a 130W power consumption. The 950 model is a Presler version of the Pentium D line. One can tell this because it features a 65nm process.
Presler is the later of the two models of Intel Pentium D 950 processors manufactured. The earlier model is the Smithfield which had a process of 90 nm. Inital speeds for the Smithfield were 2.8Ghz to 3.2Ghz; however, later an entry level model (805) running at 2.66 Ghz was added. Many users claim this chip was highly overclockable to 3.5Ghz with air cooling and up to 4.0Ghz with water cooling. All of the Smithfield CPUs were made of 2 Prescott cores.
When the Presler models came out in early 2006, nine different models were sold with speeds ranging from 2.8 Ghz to 3.6 Ghz. Some the popular models included:
- 930 - 3.0 Ghz
- 940 - 3.2 Ghz
- 960 - 3.6 Ghz
- 945 - 3.4 Ghz

Both of these models offer high speeds at a fairly inexpensive price. Since the Pentium D CPU line is now out of production, the processors are becoming harder and harder to find (as brand new units). The 3.6 Ghz - 960 model is the most desirable; however, this unit is becoming rare and the price usually reflects this which is why most people seek out the slightly slower 950 and 945 models.
